A Bright Wooden Retreat in Busan — Haeundae Wood Design Guesthouse 3F

(written by the host, Busan, October 2025)

I built this floor piece by piece over the last few years.
It wasn’t a big project at first — just an old house that needed light and wood.
But it slowly became a quiet place where travelers can rest, especially those who want something calmer than hotels near the beach.

 When Guests First Arrive

Usually, guests open the door and stop for a second.
They say, “It smells like wood!” — and that always makes me smile.
The sunlight from both windows hits the pine ceiling around noon, and it makes the whole room feel alive.

Sometimes, when I finish cleaning and open the windows, I think, ah, this air really feels slower up here.
That’s why I kept most of the design simple: wood, light, and quietness.

The Woodwork and Imperfections

Most of the furniture here came from my small workshop.

Some pieces are new, some are from reclaimed boards that I couldn’t throw away.
I sanded everything by hand — sometimes too roughly.
If you look closely, you can find small marks and uneven varnish. I left them there on purpose; it feels more real that way.

One guest said it reminded them of a “Scandinavian home.”
Maybe, but I think it’s more Busan — bright, simple, a little raw.

Living and Cooking in the Light

The living area gets strong afternoon light.
I kept the layout open so people can move freely — drink tea, read, cook.
That round white chair by the window became strangely popular; almost every guest takes a photo there.

The small kitchen works well enough for simple meals.
There’s a rattan lamp that glows soft yellow at night — I got it from Jeju.
Guests often cook ramen after the beach.
The smell of soup and sea breeze mixing in the air… it’s not fancy, but it’s real life.

 Bedroom and Morning Silence

The bedroom fits four people comfortably.

I designed the bunk beds myself — solid wood, arched frame. It wasn’t easy to move up the stairs; I scratched the wall once.

But when the morning light comes in, the room feels right.

There’s a big mirror that guests use for photos. I didn’t plan it for that, but it works well.
Some nights, when the house is empty, I sleep here too. It helps me remember why I started this place.

 A Bathroom with Blue Tiles

I wanted the bathroom to feel different.

So I used blue patterned tiles — I saw something similar in Lisbon once.
It looked strange next to wood at first, but now everyone likes it.

There’s also a washing machine in the corner

I installed it myself. It leaked twice, honestly, but now it’s fine.

 Why I Keep It Simple

This guesthouse was never meant to be luxurious.

I just wanted a space where people could slow down, breathe, and maybe think about small things again.
Wood helps with that. It smells alive.

 Location & Everyday Life
