Busan Haedong Yonggungsa Travel Route Guide Coastal Temple, Scenic Walks & East Busan Itinerary

Busan Haedong Yonggungsa Travel Route Guide

Haedong Yonggungsa is often described as the most scenic temple in Busan.

Unlike most Korean temples hidden in the mountains, this one stands directly on a rocky cliff facing the East Sea.

This guide organizes Haedong Yonggungsa by actual walking order, then connects it with nearby coastal spots to create a half-day to full-day East Busan travel route.

What Makes Haedong Yonggungsa Special

A temple built on the ocean cliff WITH PAGODA

If there is one temple in Busan where the scenery itself becomes the destination, Haedong Yonggungsa is the best example.

Built in 1376 during the Goryeo Dynasty by monk Naong, the temple was originally called Bomunsa.
In the 1970s, it was renamed after a vision involving Avalokitesvara (the Goddess of Mercy), giving rise to the name Haedong Yonggungsa.

A well-known local saying remains:

“If you pray sincerely here, one wish will come true.”

Because of this legend and its dramatic seaside location, the temple attracts families, couples, and students year-round.

Key Highlights Inside Haedong Yonggungsa (Walking Order)

1. The 108 Steps & Dharma Statue

The 108 Steps into Haedong Yonggungsa

The descent into the temple begins with 108 steps, symbolizing the release of worldly concerns.
At the entrance stands a Dharma statue believed to bring good fortune when touched.

2. Flat Walking Path (Elder-Friendly Route)

A quiet walk along the coastline

For visitors who wish to avoid stairs, there is a quieter alternative path through a bamboo forest near the traffic monument at the entrance.
This route allows gradual access to the temple grounds without steep steps.

3. Coin-Throwing Bridge

A small bridge over the sea where visitors toss coins while making wishes.
It combines ritual with one of the best photo viewpoints.

4. Sea-Facing Avalokitesvara Statue

Located at the highest point of the temple, this massive statue overlooks the East Sea.
This is the main panoramic viewpoint and the most memorable part of the visit.
